Interview confidence after 50

By Nancy Osazee, Founder

Confidence here is a prepared example, not a performance. Pick three stories from the last few years. Each story has a task, what you did, and a result you can say in under a minute.

Acas says interviewers must not ask different questions because of your age, such as how you would feel managing people older than you. You can answer the work question and ignore the age frame.

Written by Nancy Osazee, Founder of CareerPilot. This is a practical note, not advice about your own visa, contract, or legal case. Read the official page linked on this sheet before you rely on a figure.

How to prepare three stories

  1. Choose the criterion. Read the advert. Pick three skills it actually asks for.
  2. One minute each. Situation in a sentence, what you did, what changed. Stop.
  3. Practise out loud. Once, timed. If you are still talking at 90 seconds, cut the scene-setting.
  4. Prepare your questions. Ask about the work in the first month, the hours, and how the team is set up.

If the question is really about age

You can say: 'What I can tell you is how I have done this recently,' and give the example. You do not have to discuss your health, your energy, or when you plan to retire. Those are not the job.

Questions

Should I apologise for my experience?

No. Use a recent example. Length of career is not a flaw to confess.

Can I mention a course I took this year?

Yes, if it is relevant. It is evidence, not a plea.

What if I go blank?

Ask to come back to the question. Look at the trigger word on your notes if you are allowed them. One story, then stop.
