Returning to work after 50
By Nancy Osazee, Founder
A return is a hiring conversation, not a confession. Say what you did during the gap in one line, then spend the interview on work you can still do.
If the gap was caring, illness, redundancy, or study, you can name it plainly. You do not have to give medical detail.
Written by Nancy Osazee, Founder of CareerPilot. This is a practical note, not advice about your own visa, contract, or legal case. Read the official page linked on this sheet before you rely on a figure.
How to prepare a return
- Write the one-line gap. Dates, and a plain reason. '2019–2024: cared for a parent. Kept my bookkeeping practice with two clients.'
- Pick three recent proofs. Paid work, volunteering, a course, or a project. Each one needs a result.
- Update the tools. If the role uses software you last touched years ago, use it again before the interview. Say what you used, not 'willing to learn' only.
- Apply to a real requirement. Answer the advert. Do not send a CV that tries to cover every job you have ever done.
A gap is not a blank
List anything in the gap that used the same skills: a treasurer role, a freelance invoice, a care routine you organised, a qualification. If there is nothing to list, the one-line explanation is still better than a hole with no dates.

If you want fewer hours, start with roles the employer has already marked part-time.
Questions
Do I have to say why I left?
A short reason is enough. You do not owe a medical history or a family story.
Should I take any job to 'get back in'?
A stopgap can be a choice. It is not a rule. Read the hours and the pay, and use the flexible-work pages if the pattern matters.
Where are part-time roles?
CareerPilot has a part-time jobs page, matched on the title or the job type, not on a guess from the description.
