Should I disclose?
By Nancy Osazee, Founder
A short decision guide on whether, when, and how to tell an employer. There is no correct box. The flowchart is a way to choose, not a rule.
You can ask for a practical change without sharing a diagnosis. You can also decide to say nothing.
Written by Nancy Osazee, Founder of CareerPilot. This is a practical note, not medical advice and not a diagnosis. The legal points are a short plain summary, not advice about your own situation.
A flowchart you can follow
- 1Do you need a change to show your work fairly?
- NoYou can stop. You do not have to tell anyone.
- YesCan you ask without naming a condition?
- YesAsk for the practical change. You can stop there.
- You want to explainPick a moment: application, interview, offer, or in the job.
- ThenSay one request. Not your whole history.
Example wording
Application: "I work best with instructions in writing. Please send the task brief that way if you can."
Interview: "So I can answer properly, could you send the question topics the day before, and allow a short break if we run long?"
Offer: "Before I start, I want to agree two things: written instructions for new tasks, and a quiet place for focused work."
In the job: "I am finding back-to-back meetings wipe out the afternoon. Could we keep one morning a week clear, and put actions in the chat after we speak?"
What this is not
Telling an employer is not the same as being protected. The Equality Act 2010 uses its own definition of disability. Naming ADHD does not decide that for you, and staying quiet does not remove a duty that already applies. This page does not tell you which law fits your life.

If the next step is the interview itself, the one-page sheet is the companion to this guide.
Questions
Is there a right time to tell them?
No. Some people say something on the application form, some at the interview, some after the offer, and some only once they are in the job. Pick the moment you can say the practical request clearly.
Do I need a diagnosis first?
Not to ask for a practical change. GOV.UK also says you do not need a diagnosis to apply for Access to Work. A diagnosis is not what this page is for.
