The first role in a new field

By Nancy Osazee, Founder

The first role does not have to be the final one. It does have to be a job you can do in the first month with the skills you listed honestly.

Look at the duties more than the seniority in the title. A coordinator role that uses your existing skills is a cleaner bridge than a senior title you cannot evidence.

Written by Nancy Osazee, Founder of CareerPilot. This is a practical note, not advice about your own visa, contract, or legal case. Read the official page linked on this sheet before you rely on a figure.

A role is a bridge when

  • At least half the duties match work you have done.
  • The employer will train the rest, and the advert says so.
  • The pay and the hours are ones you can live on. A bridge that you cannot afford is not a plan.

Before you apply

Write the five requirements and your proof, from the career-change CV page. If two or more requirements have no proof, this advert is a later job, not the first one.

On CareerPilot

Use this when the advert itself says no experience or entry-level. It will not include every junior title.

Jobs with no experience

Questions

Should I apply for everything to 'get a foot in'?

Apply where you can evidence the duties. A pile of unmatched applications is hard to tailor and easy to ignore.

Is an entry-level title only for graduates?

No. Entry-level means the advert said so. Read it. Some entry-level roles still want a year of a specific tool.

Where are jobs that say no experience?

CareerPilot has a no-experience page, matched on phrases such as 'no experience required' or 'entry level'. Junior on its own is not treated as no experience.
