CV and cover letter for sponsored roles

By Nancy Osazee, Founder

A sponsor has to show the job is genuine and that you can do it. Your CV is for that hiring decision. It is not the visa form.

Use a UK CV: two pages is usual, reverse chronological, no photograph, no date of birth, no marital status. Say what you did, with a result, in the employer's words where they match your real work.

Written by Nancy Osazee, Founder of CareerPilot. This is a practical note, not advice about your own visa, contract, or legal case. Read the official page linked on this sheet before you rely on a figure.

How to draft the CV and the letter

  1. Mirror the occupation, not a visa slogan. Use the job title and the duties from the advert. Do not head the CV with 'seeking visa sponsorship' in place of your profession.
  2. Put sponsorship in one line. In the cover letter, one sentence is enough: you will need a Skilled Worker visa, and you are asking whether they can sponsor this role.
  3. Prove the skill level. List the duties and tools that match the occupation. A certificate you do not hold does not go on the CV.
  4. Keep the letter short. Half a page. Why this employer, why this role, the sponsorship sentence, and how to contact you.

Leave these off

  • A photograph, age, or nationality as a headline. Nationality can matter for the visa form later. It does not need to decorate the CV.
  • Any claim that a job 'guarantees' a visa.
  • Someone else's duties. Sponsors can lose their licence for a role that is not genuine.

Questions

Should the CV say I need sponsorship?

The cover letter can say it in one sentence. The CV should spend its space on the work you have done.

Is a UK CV the same as a résumé?

Use CV. Keep it to the work, the dates, and the results. Skip the photo and the personal profile that is only adjectives.

Will a tailored CV make the salary threshold lower?

No. The threshold is in the Immigration Rules. The CV is how you get the offer.
