Scotland is at the heart of the UK's energy transition.
From major transmission reinforcements and offshore wind developments through to
HVDC infrastructure and grid modernisation programmes, unprecedented investment
is taking place across the Scottish energy network. At WSP, we are supporting
many of the projects that will define the next generation of energy
infrastructure, helping connect renewable generation, strengthen network
resilience and enable Net Zero ambitions across Scotland and the wider UK.
As a Cable Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering complex HVAC
and HVDC cable systems across transmission, distribution, renewable energy and
interconnector projects. Working from our Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth offices,
you will join a growing team of specialists that combines local Scottish
knowledge with the scale and technical expertise of WSP's wider UK and global
Energy business.
This is an opportunity to work on some of the most significant energy

to shape and grow a long-term cable engineering capability in the region.

Join a growing cable engineering team delivering some of the UK's most
strategically important energy infrastructure projects, with particular focus on
Scotland's expanding transmission and renewable energy market.
• Design and develop HV and EHV cable systems for power transmission and
distribution projects, including the selection of cables, accessories,
installation methodologies and system architecture.
• Undertake cable system studies and technical assessments including cable
ratings, thermal analyses and performance evaluation using tools such as
CYMCAP.
• Produce high-quality engineering deliverables, calculations, specifications,
reports and design documentation to support project delivery.
• Support the development of HVAC and HVDC cable solutions for onshore,
offshore and interconnector projects.
• Conduct route, site and installation assessments, identifying key technical,
environmental and constructability considerations.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, client
specifications, safety requirements and environmental regulations.
• Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, manufacturers,
contractors and clients to successfully deliver cable system projects.
• Review and approve design modifications while providing technical support
throughout manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning stages.
• Participate in design reviews, technical audits and quality assurance
processes to ensure the highest engineering standards are achieved.
• Stay at the forefront of emerging cable technologies, industry developments
and engineering best practice.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related
engineering discipline.
• Proven experience in the design, specification, manufacture, testing and
implementation of HV and EHV cable systems, with experience across HVAC
projects and exposure to HVDC schemes considered highly advantageous.
• Strong technical understanding of cable system design, ampacity and rating
studies, thermal assessments and cable installation methodologies, including
the use of tools such as CYMCAP.
• Experience supporting major transmission and distribution infrastructure
projects, renewable energy developments, offshore wind connections,
interconnectors or other complex energy network schemes.
• Knowledge of relevant international standards and industry best practice,
including IEC standards, CIGRE guidance and associated technical
specifications relating to cable systems.
• Experience undertaking or supporting factory acceptance testing (FAT), site
testing, installation supervision, commissioning activities and the
witnessing of cable manufacturing, transportation and installation
operations.
• Ability to provide technical leadership and act as a subject matter expert
within multidisciplinary project teams, supporting clients, project managers
and engineering colleagues.
• Experience engaging with industry working groups, technical committees or
professional bodies such as CIGRE, IEEE, EI or IET would be advantageous.
• A collaborative approach with excellent communication skills and the ability
to build trusted relationships with clients, contractors and internal
stakeholders.
• Willingness to travel occasionally to project sites, client locations and
manufacturing facilities across the UK and internationally when required.
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng), or a demonstrable commitment towards
achieving professional registration.
• National Grid BP141 authorisation is desirable, although support can be
provided towards obtaining authorisation where appropriate.
• An interest in helping shape Scotland's future energy network and
contributing to the growth of WSP's cable engineering capability across
Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth.
