About the Role
AECOM is looking for enthusiastic and motivated apprentices to join our Technology Services team. You’ll support a diverse range of projects within the transportation sector, helping to deliver innovative technology solutions that improve the way people and infrastructure connect and operate.
Our work covers a wide range of technology-led projects, from concept, feasibility and preliminary design through to detailed design and implementation. You’ll have the opportunity to gain experience across areas such as Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), public transport technology, connected and autonomous vehicles, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, telecommunications, control centres and smart motorway technologies.
You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and technical professionals in multidisciplinary teams, gaining practical experience across the project lifecycle. Through on-the-job learning, formal training and mentoring, you’ll develop your
technical skills and knowledge while working towards a recognised qualification and building a career in Technology Services.
What You’ll Do
As a Technology Services Apprentice, you’ll work closely with experienced engineers and consultants who will provide guidance and support as you develop your skills. Your responsibilities will grow as your knowledge and confidence develop, giving you increasing exposure to live projects and technical work.
Your work may include:
Assisting with the preparation of engineering drawings, plans, technical documentation and project deliverables.
Supporting the development and delivery of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and technology projects.
Assisting with feasibility studies, site investigations and surveys.
Supporting the preparation of design information, calculations, specifications and technical reports.
Helping to collect, analyse and interpret technical, transport and project data.
Assisting with the planning, design and implementation of technology systems and infrastructure.
Supporting projects involving public transport systems, telecommunications, control centres and back-office systems.
Gaining exposure to emerging technologies, including connected and autonomous vehicles, Cooperative ITS and Mobility as a Service.
Supporting sustainable technology projects, including electric vehicle charging infrastructure and renewable energy solutions.
Participating in site visits, meetings and discussions with clients, contractors and other project stakeholders.
Working collaboratively with engineers, consultants, designers and other technical professionals across multidisciplinary project teams.
Maintaining accurate project records and providing support with general project administration.
Developing your understanding of relevant engineering standards, guidance, legislation and industry best practice.
As you progress through your apprenticeship, you’ll be encouraged to take on greater responsibility and contribute more independently to project tasks and technical deliverables.
You’ll also have opportunities to work alongside other engineering and technical disciplines, providing exposure to a broad range of transportation and infrastructure projects.
Qualifications
This role is ideal for school leavers with GCSEs, A-Levels or equivalent qualifications who can demonstrate:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English.
Three A-Levels (or equivalent, such as a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Engineering, IT, Computer Science or a related subject), including relevant technical or STEM subjects where required for the apprenticeship programme.
An interest in technology, engineering, transportation or Intelligent Transport Systems and a desire to build a career in the industry.
An aptitude for technical subjects, engineering design, digital technologies and problem-solving.
An interest in developing skills in areas such as CAD, digital engineering, telecommunications, data analysis or technology systems.
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving.
Good written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to work with colleagues and other project stakeholders.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and demonstrate initiative when working independently.
Enthusiasm, adaptability and a willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
A creative and practical approach to problem-solving.
An interest in developing a career within Technology Services and working towards the relevant professional qualification or membership.
