RINA is looking for a Graduate Electrical Engineer with a least 1 years’
experience to join its growing Power Systems consultancy capability. The team
design and deliver complex Substation Design, Protection and Power Systems
Studies engagements for large power and electricity corporations, DNOs, utility
companies and Data Center operators.
This role is be based out of our Manchester office though RINA is smart/hybrid
working organisation. Moderate travel across the UK is required though.
The Role
You will support a broad range electrical engineering projects such as
substation design, grid capacity/integration, high voltage power line design and
other sustainable engineering initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity to
become an Electrical Power Systems specialist developing modern and sustainable
solutions.
Role Responsibilities:
• Support Senior Consultants in the development of electrical power system
designs for utility, industrial, and commercial facilities.
• Assist with preparation of engineering calculations including load studies,
short-circuit analysis, voltage drop, grounding, and cable ampacity
evaluations.
• Contribute to preparation of drawings and design packages including
single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams and
equipment layouts.
• Develop, update and review technical documentation such as specifications,
equipment data sheets, study reports, and design narratives.
• Perform power system modelling tasks under supervision using approved
software tools (e.g., load flow, fault studies, protection coordination,
arc-flash analysis).
• Support protection and control design activities including relay settings
development and functional descriptions.
• Assist with substation and distribution design tasks including equipment
sizing, conduit and cable routing, grounding layouts, and bill of materials
development.
• Participate in site visits and field data collection activities to verify
existing conditions and support design development.
• Assist in development of test plans, commissioning checklists, and
energization procedures.
Role Requirements:
• Electrical Engineering graduate (Meng, CEng and/or PhD).
• At least 1 year’s commercial experience as an Electrical Engineer.
• Have working knowledge with any of the following: DIgSILENT PowerFactory,
PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, EasyPower, PSSE, MATLAB/Simulink.
• Python experience is highly preferable.
• Demonstrable and strong analytical & problem-solving capabilities with the
ability to develop practical and innovative engineering solutions.
• Ability to evaluate issues within a broader system context and understand
cross -disciplinary impacts.

• Willing to commute or relocate to Manchester.

MISSION

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Support engineering automation and digitalisation initiatives through the
use of scripting and data-processing tools where appropriate.
• Contribute to technical research, innovation proposals and engineering
development projects as opportunities arise.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS:
• Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering, particularly Power Systems
Engineering or a closely related discipline (MEng preferred).
• A PhD in Power Systems, Electrical Engineering or a related field is
considered extremely advantageous, as would Harmonic Studies and/or Flash
Studies.
• At least 1 year's commercial experience as an Electrical Engineer is
preferred.
• Academic or professional exposure to Power Systems Engineering principles,
including areas such as power system studies, protection engineering, power
generation, transmission, distribution or grid integration.
• Experience or familiarity with power systems software such as DIgSILENT
PowerFactory, PSCAD, ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, PSS®E or MATLAB/Simulink is
desirable but not essential.
• Python programming skills are highly desirable, with an interest in
engineering automation, data processing and workflow improvement. Candidates
should be comfortable developing and using scripts to support engineering
activities.
• Demonstrable analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to
develop practical and innovative engineering solutions.
• Ability to evaluate technical issues within a broader system context and
understand cross-disciplinary impacts.
• Strong communication skills and willingness to learn within a collaborative
consulting environment.
